The 2022 "Dirty Dozen" Tax Scams

Published over 1 year ago • 1 min read

Reader,

Rather than put together a recap of 2022 highlights, I thought it might be better to look forward to 2023. Afterall, preparation is one of the most critical tools in your estate planning toolbox.

I realize we are now neck-deep in the holiday season, and most people are busy preparing for festivities and family gatherings. But the sooner you start planning for your financial legacy, the better.

I’d love to speak to you about your 2023 estate planning goals, or help you come up with them. You can reach me by phone or email (or even snail mail, if writing letters is your thing!).

Tax Season: A Scammer’s Wonderland

We’re about to enter one of the most reviled seasons of the year: Tax season. Although tax season is an annoyance for most Americans, for scammers, fraudsters, and criminals it is one of the most joyous seasons of the year.

The tax code is an ever-evolving complex maze, and most people simply don’t have the time or inclination to become experts in it. Plus, let’s be honest, nobody actually likes paying taxes—they're simply a part of life.

Unscrupulous profiteers and ne’er-do-wells, however, bank on our confusion and general distaste for taxes to lure honest taxpayers into questionable tax avoidance schemes.

Every year the IRS compiles a list of some of those most common tax schemes known as the “Dirty Dozen.” This list is also important because it signals the areas in which the IRS plans to increase enforcement efforts.

I recap some of these potential abusive tax-avoidance transactions in this month’s post.

Saying Bye to 2022

This is the final edition of Generational Wealth for 2022. I always enjoy writing this newsletter, as I hope you enjoy reading it.

We’ve covered a number of vital estate planning topics this year including estate planning for blended families and LGBTQ couples, the impact of the SECURE Act 2.0 on retirement planning, the right and wrong way to relocate to Florida, and many more.

If there are any topics you’d like me to cover as we head into 2023, please let me know.

May your holidays be festive and your New Year’s celebrations be safe!

I’ll see next year!

Sincerely,

Law Office of Paul S. Labiner
